PLANS IN LA CERDANYA

Frequently asked questions about Cerdanya

Vista aèria de Puigcerdà i el llac

What activities can be done in winter in Cerdanya?

If you visit the region during the cold months, the star options are alpine skiing in resorts such as La Molina, Masella, Font Romeu or Grand Valira, and Nordic skiing in the circuits of Aransa, Guils Fontanera or Lles. If you prefer something quieter, we recommend a snowshoeing route or treat yourself to a moment of relaxation in the outdoor thermal baths of Dorres or Llo.

Which ski resorts are near Puigcerdà?

The location is strategic. Just 20 to 30 minutes by car you have the domains of La Molina, Masella, Porte Puymorens and Font Romeu. If you don’t mind driving a little longer (about 45 minutes), you can discover the slopes of Les Angles or the Pas de la Casa sector in Grand Valira.

Where can you eat well in La Cerdanya?

The mountain gastronomy here is a fundamental pillar, always betting on local products. If you are looking for a sure hit, we suggest you to book in classics of the area such as Trumfes, Can Ventura, La Cava Taberna, the traditional cuisine of La Borda del Ceretà or the meats of Cal Cofa.

Do not leave without tasting the authentic trinxat of the Cerdanya, the sausages and artisan cheeses of proximity or its amazing wines of height.

Where to stay?

Puigcerdà is the epicenter of the region, so it is the most convenient option if you are looking to have stores, restaurants and services at hand. The area surrounding the lake has boutique hotels and apartments with lots of charm. On the other hand, if your plan is to disconnect and you are looking for a more rural environment, the small surrounding villages are full of traditional stone houses.

Tips for parking in Puigcerdà

During long weekends and vacation periods, the historic center tends to fill up fast. A good trick to avoid circling is to head straight to the soccer field area; there’s plenty of space and you’re only a 10-minute walk from the shopping area.

How do I get to La Cerdanya?

By car: The fastest alternative from Barcelona is to take the C-16 crossing the Cadi Tunnel (the toll is around 14 €) and it takes about 1h 45 min. If you prefer to save the toll and enjoy the scenery, you can go up the N-260 crossing the Collada de Toses, although it is a curvy road that in winter is often complicated by snow.

OriginEstimated time
Barcelona1 hr 45 min (through the tunnel)
Girona1 hr 30 min
Toulouse1 hr 30 min
Andorra45 min

Traffic note: On Friday afternoons (operation exit) and Sunday afternoons and evenings, traffic jams of up to one hour can occur in the tunnel. If you can, travel before 15:00 or after 20:00.

By train: The Rodalies line R3 connects Barcelona Sants with Puigcerdà station in about 3 hours. It is a long trip, but ideal to forget the chains if temperatures drop. You can check the updated timetables at rodalies.gencat.cat.

By bus: The company Alsa offers regular routes from Barcelona’s Estació del Nord that take about 2h 30 min. and is usually the most economical public transport option.

Essential in winter: Always check the state of the road network at transit.gencat.cat before leaving and carry chains in the trunk.

What is the best time to visit Cerdanya?

With more than 2,400 hours of sunshine a year, the region is a perfect destination for all four seasons, depending entirely on the type of getaway you are looking for:

  • Spring (March to May): The fields are in bloom, temperatures are mild and there are no crowds. It is the ideal time to go hiking and enjoy the tranquility as a couple.
  • Summer (June to August): This is the high season for family tourism. The cool mountain climate invites you to escape from the heat of the coast and enjoy the lakes and swimming pools. It is recommended to book accommodation well in advance.
  • Autumn (September to November): The forests change color offering spectacular landscapes. It is the best time for lovers of good food, mushrooms and photography.
  • Winter (December to February): This is the star season for snow sports. You will find a fantastic alpine atmosphere, although with a lot of affluence during the weekends.
